While the summer season brings much enjoyment to the average person, for an NFL fan, it represents a desolate wasteland where Sundays just aren't quite as vibrant as in the autumn months. However, with each passing day, we inch closer to the beginning of the 2023 NFL season, which officially kicks off on September 7 this year. Injuries and questionable offensive playcalling derailed Tennessee’s season and led to the firing of Offensive Coordinator Todd Downing and the hiring of a new General Manager, Ran Carthon. The 2022 collapse came after the Titans previously won the division in back-to-back seasons. Tennessee has horrible in terms of points scored per game, and were the 3rd worst team in passing yards per game. They were above average running the ball, but even Derrick Henry struggled with the lack of a consistent passing attack. The Titans were amazingly the league’s best team at stopping the run but the worst team at stopping the pass. Those two stats averaged out to place them right in the middle of the road in points allowed per game. Significant Roster Moves The list of departures from last season’s squad is not a short one. You’ll notice a lot of offensive linemen, linebackers, and defensive backs who left the team in the offseason, most notably Zach Cunningham, Bud Dupree, Ben Jones, and Taylor Lewan. A handful of offensive skill players including Austin Hooper and Robert Woods have joined new teams for 2023, and kicker Randy Bullock became a free agent. Tennessee signed Andre Dillard to replace Lewan at left tackle, and Daniel Brunskill will be the starting right guard. Azeez Al-Shaair and Arden Key will both start at linebacker, as well as Sean Murphy-Bunting at corner. The biggest free agency signing was receiver DeAndre Hopkins, who will become the immediate top target for Ryan Tannehill. 2023 Draft Class The Titans drafted six guys in the 2023 draft, all of them on the offensive side of the ball. 1st rounder Peter Skoronski will be an immediate starter at left guard and running back Tyjae Spears will serve as the lighting to Derrick Henry’s thunder. Tennessee took a chance on former Kentucky quarterback Will Levis in the 2nd round, which was met with a heavy mix of disapproval. Levis has the physical qualities of a franchise quarterback, but he hasn’t quite shown the ability yet. Time will tell if he can become a reliable starter in the NFL. Season Schedule The Titans will take on the AFC North and the NFC South in 2023 to go along with their six divisional games. Their other three opponents are the Los Angeles Chargers, Miami Dolphins, and Seattle Seahawks. With an opponent prior season win percentage of .448, Tennessee has the 5th easiest schedule in the NFL. Tennessee’s primetime games include one Thursday night game at Pittsburgh and one Monday night game at Miami. They will also take on Baltimore in London in Week 6. Depth Charts Offense Defense Special Teams The Titans return 14 of their 22 offensive and defensive starters from last year. With a fully healthy roster, the Titans set up with a pretty fierce looking defense, despite their struggles a season ago. They should return with a solid run game, but Ryan Tannehill is going to have to prove he can throw the ball efficiently to open up that run game more. Titans fans will hope that a new offensive coordinator can accomplish that task in 2023. Coaching Staff Head Coach Mike Vrabel returns for his 6th season with the Titans. He retained two coordinators from last season: Defensive Coordinator Shane Bowen (6th seasons), and Special Teams Coordinator Craig Aukerman (7th season). Tim Kelly was promoted in the offseason to Offensive Coordinator after spending his first season in Tennessee as the Passing Game Coordinator. Betting Odds Oddsmakers have set the regular season win total for Tennessee at 7.5 games. As of right now, the Titans are the 2nd most likely team to win the AFC South but the 4th least likely to win the AFC as a whole. At +8000 to win Super Bowl LVIII, they are tied for 25th among all teams in the league. Bucket Squad Predictions Bucket Squad Sports Reports predicts the Titans to finish 8-9 in 2023 for 2nd in the AFC South but 11th in the AFC. They’ll miss out on the playoffs by a couple games this year with mediocre offensive play.
