While the summer season brings much enjoyment to the average person, for an NFL fan, it represents a desolate wasteland where Sundays just aren't quite as vibrant as in the autumn months. However, with each passing day, we inch closer to the beginning of the 2023 NFL season, which officially kicks off on September 7 this year. Whether you've had your favorite team's tweet notifications turned on all summer or if you've decided to tune out all football news entirely, you'll be able to learn everything you need to know about your team going into the 2023-24 season right here. In today's article, I'll be discussing the Philadelphia Eagles. I wrote a guidebook for every team in the NFL heading into the 2023 season. However, despite ending the regular season as the top team in the NFC East and the NFC as a whole, they were not able to finish the job in Super Bowl 57. In a hotly contested game that they led throughout, Philadelphia ended up just short in a 35-38 final. Philadelphia had the 3rd highest scoring offense and exceled in both the pass and run game in Jalen Hurts’ breakout season. They were also a top 10 scoring defense, including the best team in the NFL against the pass. As a team, they trended positively in all aspects from 2021 to 2022, and look to do the same in 2023. Significant Roster Moves The only real departures from the offense who will be missed next season are running Miles Sanders and guard Isaac Seumalo. However, a few guys from last year’s loaded defense won’t be back, namely tackles Javon Hargrave and Linval Joseph, linebackers TJ Edwards and Kyzir White, and DBs Marcus Epps and CJ Gardner-Johnson. Backup quarterback Gardner Minshew also left to join the Colts. The Eagles did a good job filling the holes that were created in the offseason, adding D’Andre Swift and Rashaad Penny to split carries in the backfield. Olimade Zaccheaus will add some depth to receiver and Marcus Mariota will back up Jalen Hurts. Nicholas Morrow and Zach Cunningham will split reps at outside linebacker and Terrell Edmunds will start at strong safety. 2023 Draft Class The Georgia Bulldogs… I mean, the Eagles continued their trend of drafting defensive players from said university, taking Jalen Carter and Nolan Smith in the 1st round of this year’s draft. They then drafted CB Kelee Ringo from the same team in the 4th round. All jokes aside, it’s a smart play to just take guys from the best defense in college football year after year. And it’s working out for the Eagles. Five of Philly’s seven picks were defensive linemen or defensive backs, and they used a 6th round pick on quarterback Tanner McKee from Stanford. However, McKee won’t see the field for a while. Season Schedule The Eagles will take on the NFC West and the AFC East in 2023 to go along with their six divisional games. Their other three opponents are the Minnesota Vikings, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Kansas City Chiefs. With an opponent prior season win percentage of .566, Philadelphia has the hardest schedule in the NFL. Philadelphia’s primetime games include one Thursday night game versus Minnesota, two Sunday night games versus Miami and at Dallas, and two Monday night games at Tampa Bay and Kansas City. Depth Charts Offense Defense Special Teams The Eagles return 15 of their 22 offensive and defensive starters from last year. The offense will look about the same as last year, and D’Andre Swift could have an incredible year in Philly’s offensive system. The defense lost several starters from last year’s team, but replaced those guys very well through the draft and free agency. Some young players from last year’s team will also step into bigger roles this season. The Eagles have their eyes set on the Super Bowl and nothing less. Coaching Staff Nick Sirianni returns for his 3rd season as head coach of the Eagles after a trip to the Super Bowl in his 2ndyear. However, he’ll only have one of his coordinators from last season’s staff: Special Teams Coordinator Michael Clay (3rd season). The two other coordinators, OC Shane Steichen and DC Jonathan Gannon, both took head coaching positions with the Colts and Cardinals, respectively. Philadelphia promoted from within for their Offensive Coordinator position, selecting former Quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson. Defensive Coordinator Sean Desai was hired from Seattle, where he served as Associate Head Coach. Betting Odds Oddsmakers have set the regular season win total for Philadelphia at 11.5 games. As of right now, the Eagles are the favorites to win both the NFC East and the NFC as a whole. At +650 to win Super Bowl LVIII, they are just behind the Chiefs for 2nd among all teams in the league. Bucket Squad Predictions Bucket Squad Sports Reports predicts the Eagles to finish 13-4 this season for 1st in the NFC East and the NFC as a whole. They’ll be in prime position to avenge their Super Bowl loss last season.
