While the summer season brings much enjoyment to the average person, for an NFL fan, it represents a desolate wasteland where Sundays just aren't quite as vibrant as in the autumn months. However, with each passing day, we inch closer to the beginning of the 2023 NFL season, which officially kicks off on September 7 this year. Whether you've had your favorite team's tweet notifications turned on all summer or if you've decided to tune out all football news entirely, you'll be able to learn everything you need to know about your team going into the 2023-24 season right here. In today's article, I'll be discussing the New York Jets. I wrote a guidebook for every team in the NFL heading into the 2023 season. They pieced together a 7-10 record last year, but still finished last in the AFC East. New York actually had a pretty elite defense last year, especially in terms of points allowed. However, their offense was a different story. Three different quarterbacks started four or more games and they experienced a few big injuries, particularly to RB Breece Hall about midway through the season. However, some offseason changes to the roster, which I’ll talk about next, bring a much different aura surrounding New York’s potential in 2023. Significant Roster Moves The Jets definitely made the biggest splash in the offseason, highlighted by the acquisition of Aaron Rodgers. That addition (or at least the possibility of it) snowballed into also signing guys like Randall Cobb, Mecole Hardman, and Allen Lazard as new weapons in a suddenly vastly improved offense, despite Corey Davis’ decision to retire at 28 years old. They also signed Dalvin Cook just a few days ago to make for potentially the best running back duo in the NFL. You can see the names from last season who won’t be back this year, but none of them really matter that much when you see the pieces added on offense. Throw in S Adrian Amos and DT Al Woods to an already impressive defensive unit and you have a massive potential for a Super Bowl appearance. 2023 Draft Class The Jets had seven draft picks this year, adding depth across a variety of positions. Most likely, none of their selections will be immediate starters due to their depth across the board. Their first three picks will provide additional support in the trenches, while the final four fall in the more skill position groups. RB Israel Abanikanda has a very high upside, though probably won’t see much playing time early in his career given the depth at running back already. Season Schedule The Jets will take on the AFC West and the NFC East in 2023 to go along with their six divisional games. Their other three opponents are the Atlanta Falcons, Houston Texans, and Cleveland Browns. With an opponent prior season win percentage of .545, New York has the 6th hardest schedule in the NFL. New York’s primetime games include a Thursday night game at Cleveland, two Sunday night games versus Kansas City and at Las Vegas, and two Monday night games versus Buffalo and the LA Chargers. They also play on Black Friday versus Miami in Week 12. Depth Charts Offense Defense Special Teams The Jets return 15 of their 22 offensive and defensive starters from last year. As I’ve already mentioned, the lack of returners works as a benefit for this Jets team. The offense? Loaded. The defense? Re-loaded. They even added Thomas Morstead at punter for added measure. I never thought I’d say this, but this Jets team will be fun to watch. Coaching Staff Head Coach Robert Saleh returns for his 3rd season in New York, along with two coordinators from last season: Defensive Coordinator Jeff Ulbrich (3rd season) and Special Teams Coordinator Brant Boyer (8thseason). Nathaniel Hackett joins the Jets as Offensive Coordinator after one season as head coach of the Broncos. He’ll be partnered once again with QB Aaron Rodgers, who he worked with for three years as O.C. in Green Bay. Betting Odds Oddsmakers have set the regular season win total for New York at 9.5 games. As of right now, the Jets are the 2nd most likely team to win the AFC East and tied for the 4th most likely team to win the AFC. At +1600 to win Super Bowl LVIII, they are 7th among all teams in the league. Bucket Squad Predictions Bucket Squad Sports Reports predicts the Jets to finish 12-5 in 2023 and win a tiebreaker with the Bills to finish 1st in the AFC East and 3rd in the AFC. They’ll have a great chance to compete for a Super Bowl in Aaron Rodgers’ first season in New York.
What do you think? Will New York be better or worse than I'm projecting? What offseason moves made by the Jets surprised you the most? Leave a comment down below and be sure to check the "NFL" section of the website for more NFL team guidebooks as I finish them. Written by Nick Swatson
