While the summer season brings much enjoyment to the average person, for an NFL fan, it represents a desolate wasteland where Sundays just aren't quite as vibrant as in the autumn months. However, with each passing day, we inch closer to the beginning of the 2023 NFL season, which officially kicks off on September 7 this year. Whether you've had your favorite team's tweet notifications turned on all summer or if you've decided to tune out all football news entirely, you'll be able to learn everything you need to know about your team going into the 2023-24 season right here. In today's article, I'll be discussing the New York Giants. I wrote a guidebook for every team in the NFL heading into the 2023 season. And not only did they make the postseason, they also eliminated the NFC’s 2nd best team in the opening round of the playoffs. However, their season came to an abrupt end after running into the red hot Eagles in the divisional round. New York was around the middle of the pack in both scoring offense and scoring defense. They definitely relied on Saquon Barkley and the run game offensively, but Daniel Jones has proven himself as a rather reliable starting QB by NFC standards. They battled injuries on both sides of the ball and cycled through receivers, so the team is hoping for a bit more stability in 2023. Significant Roster Moves The Giants lost a good amount of players who contributed heavily last season, particularly at receiver and at all three levels of the defense, as well as a couple offensive linemen. This certainly leaves some holes to fill on both sides of the ball. To replenish the roster, New York added depth at receiver and acquired perhaps the biggest name on the list above, Darren Waller, to be TE1 this season. Darrian Beavers and Bobby Okereke will both start at inside linebacker with A’Shawn Robinson coming off the edge. The Giants traded for freak athlete Isaiah Simmons in late August to add more depth in the secondary. 2023 Draft Class The Giants selected seven guys in the 2023 draft, led by three defensive backs which includes 1st round CB Deonte Banks. Banks, along with C John Michael Schmitz, have already earned starting roles heading into the season. Speedy 3rd round receiver Jalin Hyatt has impressed in preseason and will see some action during the regular season, as well as running back Eric Gray who should get some reps from Saquon Barkley and Matt Breida. Season Schedule The Giants will take on the NFC West and the AFC East in 2023 to go along with their six divisional games. Their other three opponents are the Las Vegas Raiders, Green Bay Packers, and New Orleans Saints. With an opponent prior season win percentage of .549, New York has the 3rd hardest schedule in the NFL. New York’s primetime games include one Thursday night game at San Francisco, two Sunday night games versus Dallas and at Buffalo, and two Monday night games versus Seattle and Green Bay. Depth Charts Offense Defense Special Teams The Giants return 13 of their 22 offensive and defensive starters from last year. The offense is more or less going to look the same with the primary exception of Darren Waller at tight end, but the defense will look a bit different in 2023. There needs to be improvement on both sides of the ball, but with plenty of one-score games in 2022, one or two games could make the difference in a potentially contested NFC East. Coaching Staff Brian Daboll returns for his 2nd season as head coach of the Giants after a successful first season at the helm. All three coordinators return from last season’s staff as well: Offensive Coordinator Mike Kafka (2ndseason), Defensive Coordinator Don “Wink” Martindale (2nd season) and Special Teams Coordinator Thomas McGaughey (6th season). Betting Odds Oddsmakers have set the regular season win total for New York at 7.5 games. As of right now, the Giants are the 3rd most likely team to win the NFC East and the 9th most likely team to win the NFC as a whole. At +6500 to win Super Bowl LVIII, they are tied for 21st among all teams in the league. Bucket Squad Predictions Bucket Squad Sports Reports predicts the Giants to finish 9-8 in 2023 for 3rd in the NFC East. They’ll unfortunately fall just one game out of the playoffs in 8th place in the NFC.
