It was a joy to finally make it to Week 1 of the SEC football season, and we were treated to some exciting matchups even during a week of several easy games for most teams. However, the teams facing non-conference Power 5 opponents didn't fare as well as teams from the SEC typically do. Florida wasn't very competitive against Utah, South Carolina struggled against North Carolina, and LSU was steamrolled by Florida State in a battle of top-tens. Tennessee's stomping of Virginia was the only win generated by the SEC in Power 5 matchups in Week 1.
Regardless, we are all thrilled that college football is back. And even if it feels like your team's season is already over before it really began, you can follow our season-long challenge and use the BSSR experts' advice to win some money this fall.
The SEC will attempt to collectively right their wrongs from last week's non-conference performance via the five Power 5 matchups in Week 2, with an additional top-25 contest featuring a non Power 5 opponent. Vanderbilt, Texas A&M, Alabama, Mississippi State, and Auburn will all take on teams from either the ACC, Big 12, or Pac 12, while Ole Miss will face 24th ranked Tulane in New Orleans.
The most anticipated matchup this weekend is Alabama's primetime meeting with #11 Texas in a rematch from last season. Alabama was a massive favorite in that game and barely squeaked by with a victory, but the Longhorns will be coming to Tuscaloosa this time around. This will be our first real look at Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe this season as the Tide face their first test of the young season. As far as our BSSR SEC Bets Challenge, Micah has taken an early lead on the rest of the field, as he was the only one to correctly pick North Carolina over South Carolina. Ryne performed very well in the over/under category, but was hurt by his ATS record. I'm starting the season in last place overall, but there's still plenty of time for all of us to catch Micah. Stay tuned each week to see how the race shakes itself out.
