Brackets were busted during the second half of the NCAA Tournament's first round games, which took place on Friday. Namely, for those who picked Auburn to go far in their bracket.
As one of those people, I ask the NCAA to please launch an investigation on Auburn's basketball program. Because I'm convinced their players threw the game down the stretch against (13) Yale. The Tigers had four players go to the free throw line in crunch time, and three of those players (who shoot 88 percent, 83 percent, and 78 percent from the line on the season), went 0/4. And one of those was the front end of a one-and-one.
Auburn was winning for pretty much the entire game before collapsing in the final minutes, as their players appeared to have their abilities stolen and a lid put on the rim in their "effort" to preserve their season. Or they got in some trouble with the mob and became part of a complex point shaving scheme to pay off their debts, which is probably the most likely explanation for their loss against a bunch of scrubs from the Ivy League.
Anyway, let's quickly discuss the remaining fifteen games of the day before looking at how the Mega March Madness Matchup Monstrosity leaderboard stands after the first round of games is complete. The 1-seeds all took care of business with UConn, Purdue, and Houston all rolling to massive victories. Only one 4-seed or better lost, which was Auburn as mentioned above. (2) Marquette, (3) Baylor, (4) Duke, and (4) Alabama all cruised to double digit victories as well. It was a day for the 12-seeds as both James Madison and Grand Canyon dominated their 5-seeded opponents, Wisconsin and Saint Mary's to pull off big upsets. The only 5-seed that didn't comply was San Diego State, who held on to beat UAB in the final seconds. (6) Clemson, (8) Utah State, and (9) Texas A&M all looked impressive in their victories despite anticipated close games in their matchups. In fact, Clemson was actually the underdog to heavy upset pick New Mexico. The two other most exciting games of the day were (9) Northwestern's overtime thriller over (8) FAU and (10) Colorado's upset of (7) Florida, which ended on a last second shot from the Buffaloes that hit every part of the rim before it dropped. The first round is now fully complete, so we can look forward to the Round of 32 beginning on Saturday. The MMMMM is also heating up, as we have a three-way tie for first place currently.
