NCAA Tournament Bracket Challenge - Final Four Update

The Final Four took place on Saturday night in Phoenix, Arizona.  And despite valiant efforts from the underdogs, the higher seeds proved to be too much in the end.  Both games followed similar trajectories with the game remaining close until halftime, with the 1-seed pulling away in the second half.  As a result, (1) Purdue took down the Cinderella, (11) NC State in the first game, and (1) UConn defeated (4) Alabama in the second matchup.
The stage is now set for a colossal matchup on Monday night between two teams who have been very impressive in the tournament, but are coming from completely different places in their postseason stories.

For Purdue, they became just the second 1-seed of all time to lose to a 16-seed in the opening round of last year's tournament.  Now, they can follow exactly what Virginia did a few years ago and run the table to win the title as a 1-seed the year following the massive upset.  The Boilermakers run through 7'4" center Zach Edey, and are extremely tough to beat if their perimeter players are knocking down shots and the officiating is called more tightly.

As for UConn, they're looking to become the first team to repeat as national champions in back-to-back seasons since the Florida Gators did it in 2006-07.  They were dominant in their unexpected title run last year, and they've looked even more unbeatable during this year's run.  And they've done it without shooting the ball particularly well from three.  But if there's a team who can stop them, it's Purdue.

The BSSR Mega March Madness Matchup Monstrosity has come down to the winner of the championship game for the first time in BSSRMMMMM history.  If UConn wins, McInItToWinIt will retain the lead and win outright.  If Purdue wins, there will be a tie between McInItToWinIt and WhoisMicah?

In the event of a tie, the winner of the bracket challenge would come down to a historic tiebreaker.  I've obtained independent predictions for the total amount of points scored in the game tonight from the two contenders, and whoever's predicted total is closer will be crowned our champion and etch their name into BSSR lore.

Here are the predicted point totals for each of the two contending brackets, which will be used in the event that Purdue wins:

  • McInItToWinIt - 155 points
  • WhoisMicah? - 159 points

(Closest to the actual point total without going over will win the tiebreaker.  If both go over, then the closest to the actual will win.)

Here's the MMMMM leaderboard in the final update before the bracket challenge is decided:

Check back tomorrow where I present the 3rd Annual BSSR Mega March Madness Matchup Monstrosity champion and induct him/her into the BSSRMMMMM Hall of Champions.
