The Sweet 16 is finally set after an exciting second day of games in the Round of 32.
Though we only saw one upset all day, (8) UConn gave (1) Florida all they could handle in Sunday's opening game. Like so many teams have done this tournament, the Gators used a late run to fuel their come from behind victory to save their season and advance to the next round.
The other 1 seed in action, Duke, had no problem with (9) Baylor, winning by more than 20 points to keep the ACC alive in the tournament. The remaining SEC schools, (2) Alabama, (3) Kentucky, and (6) Ole Miss all coasted to victories as well, with the Rebels' victory being the lone upset of the day over (3) Iowa State. (2) Michigan State trailed at halftime against (10) New Mexico, but delivered down the stretch to escape with a relatively comfortable eight point win.
The most exciting game of the night was (4) Maryland vs. (12) Colorado State. Trailing by two with seconds to play, the Rams opted to go for the win on their final possession and drained a three to go up by one with three seconds on the clock. However, Maryland's Derik Queen took the ensuing inbounds to the hole and banked in a jumper while falling out of bounds as time expired, pushing the Terrapins into the Sweet 16. It was an awesome ending for Maryland fans, who had suffered several buzzer beating defeats throughout the season. (4) Arizona and (5) Oregon went back and forth in the final game of the night, but Arizona's veterans came up clutch in the closing minutes to hold off the Ducks and become the final team to earn a trip to the Sweet 16. The Mega March Madness Matchup Monstrosity is heating up, as we have a lot of brackets with all Final Four teams remaining. Here's how the leaderboard stands after the Round of 32 has concluded.
There's a good chance that our bracket challenge will be decided by just a few games, so if you're in contention and want to know who to root for or against in the Thursday/Friday games, here's a view of everyone's remaining picks.
Good luck to everyone in the MMMMM field as we're sure to encounter a lot of busted brackets over the next week. We'll be back with another update on Friday after the first four games of the Sweet 16 are played.
